Subject: gethostbyname failures under Winsock 1.0b6
Hi...
The subject pretty well says it all, I think. I
started to play with SLip from home finally, and after
a period of time, winsock doesn't seem to allow resolution
of names anymore...but IP #'s still work.
I started up with 1.0a, which ran for about 8 hours
before I started having problems. First Eudora couldn't
connect to my mail server, and then trying to telnet into
the slip host wouldn't work (by name...again, number
worked).
I saw the postings about 1.0b6, so went out and got
that to try out and actually found that the problem
manifests itself even faster now.
My main question is whether this is a known bug,
and if so, is there a fix?
thanks...

The idea there is to configure WSGopher to use the telnet client of your
choice. Assuming that you are using WSGopher 1.0 (or later :-) you can press
F1 while the telnet configuration dialog is up, to get more clear instructions
on what to do. A later version of WSGopher includes a Help button in each
dialog, though F1 still works.
I have used WSGopher with both free or shareware telnets (like trmptel) and
commercial telnets. The biggest problem is figuring out what command line
options the telnet client wants to take. For instance, trmptel likes
"host:port" but seems to handle "host port" (with an intervening space), at
least in version 0.05 and above; the SuperTCP client "vtterm.exe" wants "-h
host -p port". I learned that by looking at the help file.
I have some mail on the Wollongong telnet client, but don't know what other
commercial clients want.
>An FTP site would be nice, thanx.!
Any FTP site where you can get telnet and/or 3270 clients should do. Or
commercial clients should work, so long as you can specify a host and port on
the command line, somehow.
The FTP site for trmptel is an FAQ, but nonetheless it's
petros.psychol.utas.edu.au:pub/trumpet/trmptel or thereabouts.
